The covers are off!

On Monday, we officially took the floating row covers off of the potato field and things are looking fantastic!

We are so excited about our potato crop this year! It's our third season growing potatoes and we've learned a lot in a short time. Besides patience, the hardest thing to minimize are potato beetles and weeds.

In some ways that's true for many crops, but organically managing potato beetles without many different fields to rotate crops has been and will continue to be a challenge. We use these massive floating covers to protect the spuds from beetles.

Invariably, some beetles find their way in, but in general, these row covers reduce the pest pressure considerably. Of course, having covers on the field means controlling the weeds requires removing the covers and putting them back again each time we want to cultivate. That's the tedious part.

We're pleased with the results so far and as they begin to flower, we focus on even moisture, keeping weeds under control, and pretty soon, harvesting our first early potatoes!

We've never planted this many spuds before, so it's a thrilling journey to be a part of. If all goes well, it'll be awesome! Obviously there's a lot of time from here to there, and our goal is to do the best we can to steward this crop to fruition.

Organic potatoes for the people!

Petoskey, Michigan -

A shoutout to our community! Thank you for all of your support this summer! Wednesday we set a new market record for Open Sky, and it’s because of you. We put a lot of love (and hard-work) into our flowers, and we do it because our community continues to show up for us. We believe growing beautiful, sustainable flowers is a small way we can change the world for the better. Thank you for the kind words, encouragement, and for supporting local farmers. You all keep us going on those long, hard days, and we appreciate you! From the crew at Open Sky Farm, thank you!
