The North Country National Scenic Trail (“NCT”)—a unit of the National Park Service—is the longest National Scenic Trail established by the U.S. Congress, spanning 4600 miles and seven states from New York to North Dakota. Michigan has the most NCT trail miles of any state, over 1150.
Much of the NCT, in Michigan—including the section passing through Petoskey—has been designated part of Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail (MIBT)—Governor Snyder’s initative, administered by the DNR, of dual trails (biking and hiking) running from Belle Isle near Detroit to Ironwood in the western U.P.
Around Petoskey, the NCT traverses the Skyline Trail, the NCMC Natural Area, the Bear River Valley Recreation Area, the Little Traverse Wheelway, and the Northwestern State Trail.
The North Country Trail Association, headquartered in Lowell, Michigan, is a volunteer organization which helps build, promote, and protect the NCT. This event is organized with the participation of local NCTA Chapters: Jordan Valley 45o Chapter, and Harbor Springs Chapter.
In 2012, Petoskey became a “Trail Town” of the NCT, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the NCTA. As an NCTA “Trail Town”, the City of Petoskey supports hiker services, and promotes the trail locally as a resource to be protected and celebrated.
