Most folks would agree that finding your first Petoskey stone is a Michigander rite of passage. But do you know exactly what a Petoskey stone is? A fossil! Specifically, a fossil of long-gone Hexagonaria coral. This coral lived in prehistoric Michigan, when waters were warm, shallow, and even tropic! Final favorite from 2019 - a last second catch of the sunset in Petoskey. We ventured a little north on the solstice and played on the beach at the Petoskey State Park for a couple hours until it looked like the chance for a spectacular sunset had dwindled. Wrong. Every. Time. As we headed back south I searched for road-end spots, after seeing this. I shot a few images at the next stop up, but decided it was worth the risk (of losing the light entirely) for a chance at this wicked icy foreground. I don’t think I’ve ever wished for my micro spikes so badly!

I always love visiting my hometown of Petoskey in Northern Michigan. Growing up on Lake Michigan gave me such a beautiful childhood, and being surrounded by the lake and Little Traverse Bay, tons of woodlands and wetlands, and spending my summers at the beach instilled in me a deep love for nature and a desire to be a good steward of our beautiful Earth. Review-wise, i though it was entertaining but I didn’t love it. To me, it was a forgettable thriller, even though the concept is very intriguing. The twist was delivered in a kinda meh way and the plot requires some suspension of disbelief around the law and around certain characters behaviors. On a chilly mid May morning we were preparing to work outside all day, I squinted to see a faint second line on a pregnancy test. ⠀
⠀
I hid it in a drawer and went outside. “Too early to get excited” I told myself. But I was so excited already.
⠀
So all summer, the dahlias, the garden, the plants- it meant more to me. I was obsessed. A history of loss gives you a real grip on anxiety during those first few months so when the dahlias were doing well I did some magical thinking that I was doing well. ⠀
⠀
Another week I kept the garden alive. Another week I stayed pregnant. ⠀
⠀
When the zinnias floundered I wondered if it was some weird ass sign. ⠀
⠀
But more so than grasping for control in a patch full of plants, they were my marker. My timeline. Of how slow, and painstakingly patient ya gotta be. And a reminder for the 2938373272th time that my thoughts & anxieties do not have to be truths. ⠀
⠀
We are expecting another baby this winter. We are overjoyed. There is no part of my fertility journey that has ever followed the obsessive, control freak timeline I set out for our 'family plan' 5 years ago- but forced going with the flow has been both the biggest lesson & gift in all of it. ⠀

To my sisters who this announcement meets in the trenches of your 'waiting period' I see you. I was you. There is a lot of light on the other side- and I promise you the shitty wait doesn't define your life but the strength you gained will. ⠀
