Boyne Highlands – Zoo-de-Mack Bike Bash – May 21 – 22, 2016
The Zoo-de-Mackinac is a weekend of huge parties with great bands, one of the most scenic bicycle rides in the country, a lot of sunshine, views of the mighty Mackinac Bridge, and one magical island.
THIS IS NOT A RACE! The Zoo-de-Mackinac is a collection of outdoor enthusiasts (3,500 in 2011) who want to enjoy a little physical exercise together in one of the most beautiful areas in the state of Michigan. The bike ride starts Saturday morning at Boyne Highlands Resort and spans 51 miles along Lake Michigan on a paved road with very little automobile traffic.
Riders pedal through rolling countryside and trillium covered forests, along sandy beaches, and are surrounded by breathtaking views of Lake Michigan from 400′ high bluffs. We stop approximately half way, at a unique place called the Legs Inn for a leisurely lunch and to swap stories.
The ride continues on to Mackinaw City, where Arnold Ferry boats have been chartered for the ride over to Mackinac Island. Once on the magical island, check into your hotel and stroll into town to forget the aches and pains from the day’s ride. As the evening wears on, the island comes alive with The Gatehouse, Pink Pony, and Horns hosting post ride parties with incredible live bands!

We have the update that most have been waiting for.... and expecting about the fall Zoo-de-Mack ride. Unfortunately, due to the recent changes in the current COVID rules in region 6, just this afternoon we have had to make the decision to cancel the fall ride.
The Details: Because the event was scheduled in region 6 that has been in "phase 5" for quite some time, we had a safe plan to host a smaller version of Zoo-de-Mack and things were progressing as planned.
With the recent and VERY unexpected executive order which severely changed the capacities of the bars and other indoor spaces in Northern Michigan (Region 6) we were forced to rethink the event.
Given celebrating and socializing has always been a large part of the Zoo-de-Mack weekend, we have had to closely evaluate what could and could not be done in the region's current phase. After lengthy discussions with the management at Boyne Highlands as well as the bars on the Island, the current restrictions would pretty much eliminate the socializing and celebrating aspect of the everyone has come to love and expect.
We and everyone else involved are taking a very CONSERVATIVE approach to the interpretation and enforcement of the current rules. Taking all of this into consideration, we simply don't want to reduce the Zoo-de-Mack experience to just the bike ride. Under the current executive orders we could not host the Friday night welcome party or the finish line party at the crossings and the bars on the island have an average capacity of 40 guests, no live music and most are closing by 9pm. 🙁
Of course much of this could change before the date and ideally we would like to wait and see if the order is lifted by mid September, however we realize that everyone needs a decision sooner than later to finalize their summer and fall travel plans.
All registrations will be automatically forwarded to the May 2021 ride along with your shirt orders, etc. We will still accept name changes if for some reason when that time rolls around you are unable to make the ride.
We will be sending out a formal email on Friday to all riders who opted to go on the fall ride with this same information but we wanted to get this posted on our Facebook page as soon as possible.
We are SUPER DISAPPOINTED right along with you... We appreciate you all and look forward to celebrating with you in May.
I will see everyone next year. I was prepared for it to cancel. Was just hoping for the best... But I completely understand.

ZOO-DE-MACK 2020 UPDATE - MON 3/30/20 Greetings Zoo-de-Mackers - Here is a quick update:
We were very hopeful the past few weeks that things would improve around the state by the time Zoo-de-Mack is scheduled (May 15th -- still 7 weeks away) as things are very unpredictable.
As many of you have begun to hear, some (but not all by any means) of the hotels on the island have opted not to open on May 1st and under the circumstances are moving their opening later. The Grand Hotel is mostly convention business so they are not opening until 5/22 (Memorial Day weekend). We are in touch with the visitors bureau who seems to think that most island hotels will remain open - but the new info is a day by day basis.
**The scheduled event is still 7 weeks away***
The ZDM team is in the process of checking with dozens of local businesses, vendors and hotels to identify a postponement date for the fall. We are only 48 hours away from finalizing the most likely date. As you can imagine there are a TON of moving parts from hotels, ferry service, Legs Inn and working around other large events and conventions already scheduled on the island.
Thank you for your patience! A formal email and Facebook announcement will be released soon. We still look forward to the 31st Annual Ride! We are recommending to wait a few days to modify any of your reservations so you can adjust your reservations with one phone call. As soon as full details are available check the Zoo-de-Mack Facebook page for details as well as your email inboxes. We'll be posting details as they are available on the We Bike Detroit FB page as well.
