Most folks would agree that finding your first Petoskey stone is a Michigander rite of passage. But do you know exactly what a Petoskey stone is? A fossil! Specifically, a fossil of long-gone Hexagonaria coral. This coral lived in prehistoric Michigan, when waters were warm, shallow, and even tropic! Once the Hexagonaria coral had fossilized into the Petoskey stones we know today, they were plucked from ancient Michigan bedrock by glaciers, and spread all over the state as the glaciers melted and moved.

The Petoskey Stone has been the state stone since 1965 and is a fossilized coral commonly found in Michigan’s northern lower peninsula. The name Petoskey comes from an Ottawa Indian Chief named Pet-O-Saga meaning sunbeams of promise🙌🏻

Hello from the other side of Lake Michigan! I’ve been doing some *serious* vacation reading up here and I started and finished THE SILENT PATIENT yesterday. 👀📖 Thrillers are my jam when I’m lounging on the beach or in a cabin and lots of people recommended this one on my thriller post a few weeks back. I serendipitously found it in a Little Free Library a few days ago! •

Review-wise, i though it was entertaining but I didn’t love it. To me, it was a forgettable thriller, even though the concept is very intriguing. The twist was delivered in a kinda meh way and the plot requires some suspension of disbelief around the law and around certain characters behaviors. However, I know a lot of you love this book, so let’s chat about it! 👇🏼👇🏼

It’s no secret that we’re road tripping right now. We are staying in Petoskey, Michigan for the next 2 nights. While looking for coffee this morning in the clubhouse, I found a “take a book, leave a book” shelf! Unfortunately every book I have with me is one I haven’t read so I can’t participate...unless I manage to get a book read in the next 48 hours!

Final favorite from 2019 - a last second catch of the sunset in Petoskey. We ventured a little north on the solstice and played on the beach at the Petoskey State Park for a couple hours until it looked like the chance for a spectacular sunset had dwindled. Wrong. Every. Time. As we headed back south I searched for road-end spots, after seeing this. I shot a few images at the next stop up, but decided it was worth the risk (of losing the light entirely) for a chance at this wicked icy foreground. I don’t think I’ve ever wished for my micro spikes so badly!

I always love visiting my hometown of Petoskey in Northern Michigan. Growing up on Lake Michigan gave me such a beautiful childhood, and being surrounded by the lake and Little Traverse Bay, tons of woodlands and wetlands, and spending my summers at the beach instilled in me a deep love for nature and a desire to be a good steward of our beautiful Earth. Growing up “Up North” not only shaped my career and my body of work in my photography and my writing, but it also shaped who I am as a person.
